GCSE & A-Level English Literature Tutoring
At both GCSE and A-Level, English Literature requires both a secure understanding of the core texts and a clear command of exam technique and structure. Who teaches it
English Literature is taught by Imogen, who studies French & Art History at the University of Edinburgh and holds A-Levels in English Literature, French and Art. Within her degree she continues to use and develop the skills she gained through her A-Levels, analysing literature in French and using the same techniques she built in school. What we cover
Covering any exam board (and associated texts) that we are confident in — including AQA, Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR — we offer support across the range of skills necessary to be successful in this subject. We also support Key Stage 3 English (Years 7–9), building the reading, analysis and writing foundations that GCSE English then draws on.
- Set texts: this is the main crux of the syllabus, and it's vital to have a proper understanding of the prose, poetry and dramas covered. Each child is likely to be focussing on a different combination of texts and areas to work on, so we modify our approach accordingly.
- Essay technique: one of the most vital aspects of achieving the top grades in this subject, so we place a real emphasis here. From building a clear argument to embedding quotation and writing with a critical voice, we tailor sessions to the specific needs of our students.
- Context and interpretation: going above and beyond the standard, using easy-to-apply techniques to boost grades. We especially focus on the reproducibility of analysis, and work on ways to improve confidence in high-stakes exam conditions.
Our approach to English Literature
We see English Literature as a subject in which one-to-one tuition can be by far the most fortuitous. Such a broad range of skills are tested that each student's strengths and weaknesses will be wildly apart, and so may not be fully addressed in busy classrooms.
